Turning Japanese

Japan October 2007-1

Hello Blogosphere – I have missed you!

I have plenty to catch up on but I thought I would share with you a moment of sublime happiness. It happened as I was sat in the bar of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Tokyo. Arrayed before me were the blinking lights of the Megalopolis. A double shot of 18 year old Talisker was helping me digest the finest beef I have ever eaten. All around me were middle-aged Japanese business men talking to what appeared to be their nieces and I sat reading an excellent book and sighing with happiness because P was at that very moment flying out to join me.

After a grim, work-bedevilled period, such relaxation is an unalloyed joy. On the other hand I have urgently to find a cheaper way of being content!

  1. you mean these girls, they were like, NOT their nieces?

my (decidedly caucasian) friend spent a summer being a pretend niece to japanese businessmen – a pretend niece who pretended to be spending the evening in a posh bar pretending to teach them english (very lucrative it was too)

    hajimemashite (or summat like that)

  2. Good to see you, again! Hope you and P have a lovely time in Tokyo and wherever else in Japan your hearts take you.
I’m of the opinion that 18-year-old Talisker is simply perfect at whatever price. Or were you referring to the cost of the beef you were digesting?…

  3. ah THERE you are! we were wondering. you won’t be surprised to learn that you’re a BIG favourite in our house at the moment. are you and p going to have a ‘lost in translation’ moment? xxx

  4. pffftt…and here I was worried that you were in a gutter somewhere smelling of old Guiness.

Fine! Be in Japan having a great time while I try to figure out how to make a ghost kitten Halloween costume for my daughter. I’m having a good time, too! Except without the shiny lights and great food.

  5. Another laugh-out-loud line: “men with women who appeared to be their nieces” … great to hear from you! AM
